The "Ed Spreen Mini" - A History

Team Spreen Racing

Hackensack, New Jersey

1966 AUSTIN COOPER S

1970 SCCA National Champion C Sedan

Built from a brand-new Austin Cooper S in 1966, this is one of the most famous Minis that raced in the United States during the early SCCA sedan racing years. After racing for one season in England, in 1967 this Mini was purchased by Ed Spreen and brought to the U.S., marking the start of a long and successful SCCA racing career. Spreen was a BMC dealership in Hackensack, New Jersey, and so they were able to get the same special parts from Abington Special Tuning that were used on "Works" cars from Downton and Cooper Car Company. If you were a road racing fan in the Northeast U.S. in the 1960's, you saw this Mini run; it was one of just a few Minis left that raced the ARRC at Daytona and Riverside in 1967, 1968, and 1969.

This Mini won several North East SCCA division Championships and qualified for the SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta every year they campaigned the Mini. In 1970, the Team Spreen Mini won the SCCA Runoffs in C Sedan.
